The Altafiumara Hotel stands in an area of outstanding beauty along the Costa Viola between Villa San Giovanni and Scilla, only 11 km from Reggio Calabria. It is immersed in a 10-hectare park, that dominates the coves and splendid beaches of the Costa Viola, where Scilla and Cariddi live on in a timeless and enchanted fairytale. The Altafiumara Castle was originally a Bourbon fortress, called the Santa Trada Fort, built at the end of the 18th century. It was mainly a military post built as a defence against sea raids, and, together with the Torre Cavallo Fort, it was used as a strategic point to control the Straits of Messina. In 1860 it was the scene of skirmishes between the Bourbons and Garibaldi's troops, which had landed at the mouth of the Santa Trada torrent. Finally, it was bought by a private society and transformed into an elegant structure used for tourism. Since the year 2000 it has been a part of the Reggio Calabria Hotels and, after careful restoration work, it has become the most exclusive hotel in Calabria.
The rooms of the Castle are exclusively suites. Furnished with tasteful furniture and high quality fabrics, these rooms with attached drawing room have an air of warmth and elegance, without disregarding the most modern comforts. All of them overlook the enchanting Straits of Messina and are equipped with: air conditioning, computer and modem connection, hair-dryer, bath and shower, desk, three telephones with direct external line, satellite colour television, pay TV, safe deposit box and fridge/bar. The Castle has 7 halls that have a capacity of up to 200 people, elegantly furnished and well equipped for work meetings, conventions, seminaries and other reunions. Set within a romantic garden, the "islands", nine Mediterranean-style villas called after the islands that surround Sicily (Alicudi, Filicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano, Lampedusa and Pantelleria), look out over a pool of water shaded by palm trees called the water-nymph pond. The restaurant's menu is attentive to everyone's needs, even health buffs. On the ground floor there is also a spa dedicated to relaxation and enjoyment.
